October is Adopt A Dog Month

October is Adopt A Dog Month, so I thought I'd introduce you to some of the dogs we've adopted over the last twenty five years. Some were adopted by my parents and were family pets, others have been adopted by myself and my Mum since my Dad passed away, and some have been adopted by my brother and his wife. The dogs all have different backgrounds - strays, puppy farm dogs, pups born into rescue, abandoned dogs, abused dogs, ex racing greyhounds and dogs that had to be given up due to changes in the owners circumstances.

Name

Speckles

Breed

English Springer Spaniel

Year adopted

1992

Circumstances

Speckles was rehomed as his owners were moving to America and could only take two of their three dogs with them. As Speckles was the youngest of the dogs they chose to rehome him. He was a fun dog who was especially close to my brother, Alan. Speckles helped him though some tough teenage years that involved ill health, the loss of close family members and bullying.

Name

Henry

Breed

English Springer Spaniel

Year Adopted

2008

Circumstances

Henry was abandoned in a house for several weeks. When he was rescued he was very close to death. Henry was a very special dog who saved my life twice. He was a unique (and slightly naughty) boy and we miss him very much.

Name

Busco

Breed

Greyhound

Year Adopted

2010

Circumstances

Busco is an ex racing greyhound who was adopted by Alan and Sarah when she retired. Unfortunately she kept escaping from their garden, she was a real Houdini, so she went to live with Sarah's parents. They recently moved to Spain and Busco is enjoying the warmer climate.

Name

Bandit

Breed

Lurcher

Year Adopted

2010

Circumstances

Bandit was a stray who was believed to come from a local travellers camp. He spent a year in rescue kennels before Alan and Sarah adopted him. He had a lot of behavioural problems, but he's now a great pet. Bandit is a sensitive boy who helps Alan with his health problems.

Name

Skipper

Breed

Lurcher

Year Adopted

2010

Circumstances

Skipper’s mum was found straying while heavily pregnant. Skipper was born at the rescue centre but was very ill as a pup. Sadly some of his litter mates didn't survive. Skipper is a shy, sweet boy.

Name

Jessie

Breed

Mastiff cross Great Dane

Year Adopted

2012

Circumstances

Jessie spent her whole life in a shed being used as a breeding machine. She had been physically abused and was covered in burns from cigarettes and scars from other wounds. Despite her horrific background she was the gentlest dog you could ever meet, a true gentle giant. Jessie was a Crufts Friends For Life finalist in 2014. I miss her terribly.

Name

Bo

Breed

Scottish Deerhound cross

Year Adopted

2014

Circumstances

When Bo was 12 years old his owners divorced. Neither of the owners could keep him due to work commitments and Bo found himself in rescue kennels. He's now 15 and is a little wobbly on his legs, but he's still a happy, cheeky character.

Name

Cherry

Breed

Beagle

Year Adopted

2016

Circumstances

Cherry spent nearly four years as a breeding bitch on a puppy farm. She'd never left her squalid shed so when she was rescued she was terrified of everything. Cherry is still a nervous dog but she's made huge progress. She loves cuddles, walks and playing with other dogs.

Name

Devon

Breed

Collie cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Year Adopted

2017

Circumstances

Devon was found straying in 2014 and Alan and Sarah fostered him before he was rehomed. Sadly in spring 2017 Devon’s owner became ill and was unable to keep him. Alan and Sarah couldn't bear to see him sad in kennels so they again fostered him. This time they couldn't let him go so they adopted him. Devon is a fun, lively dog who's obsessed with tennis balls.

Please consider adopting a dog from your local rescue centre.
